TWSC Director Dr. Ricardo T. Jose Receives his 2016 UPAA Distinguished Alumni Award

The UP Third World Studies Center Director, Dr. Ricardo T. Jose received his 2016 University of the Philippines Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award in Historical Scholarship and Research at the UP Bahay ng Alumni last 25 June 2016.

Below is an excerpt from Dr. Jose's nomination for the award:

Dr. Ricardo T. Jose is the country’s preeminent scholar on the Second World War in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific. A distinction he earned not only from his peers in the academe, both here and abroad, but also from the media and the public. He is also an expert in Japan-Philippine relations and the United States’s colonial rule of the Philippines. Dr. Jose’s preeminence in his chosen fields came about through his unparalleled devotion to excellent scholarship, his indefatigable intellectual curiosity coupled with meticulousness in research, and his generosity with his time and intellect....Awarding Dr. Jose with a Distinguished Alumnus Award not only affirms that his standards of scholarship are those that should be emulated, a true epitome of the academic values that the University stands for. Giving Dr. Jose such an honor affirms that for an alumnus of the national university, leading a life of the mind does not mean holing up in an ivory tower—it involves constantly finding ways to tie up one’s scholarly pursuits with the needs of the national community today and tomorrow.

EIDR Research to be Presented at the 2nd Manila Urban Design Festival

Rard Daguio, JC Rosette, Johnson Damian, Dominic Aloc, and Dianne Olivan, members of the research team of the "The Mass Transit System in Metro Manila: From Tranvia to MRT, 1879-2014" will be presenting the study to the public at the 2nd Annual Manila Urban Design Festival (MUDF). This research is supported by the University of the Philippines Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs' Emerging Interdisciplinary Research Grant (2015-2017) and is a collaboration between the Third World Studies Center and the Geography Department of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy of the University of the Philippines and the National Center for Transportation Studies.

The presentation will be on 25 June 2016 (Saturday), from 1:00 to 3:30 PM, at the Curiosity Design Strategy, 2/F, 115 Maginhawa Street, Teachers Village East, Diliman Quezon City. Registration is FREE.

The presentation is part of a series of pop-up talks that will culminate the week-long MUDF.

Karay-karay ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte papasok sa Malacañang ang nakakasulasok na usapin ng pagpapalibing sa dating pangulo at diktador na si Ferdinand Marcos sa Libingan ng mga Bayani. Ipapalibing n'ya raw si Marcos sa nasabing libingan dahil naging sundalo naman ito noong Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig. Totoong naging sundalo si Marcos sa panahong iyon. Pero anong klaseng sundalo? Sundalong nanraraket, sundalong nanggagantso, sundalong sinungaling, sundalong namemeke ng ranggo, sundalong nag-iimbento ng mga medalya at titulo, sundalong pinagpasasaan ang isyu ng mga beterano, sundalong kinatasan ang mga bayad-pinsala sa digmaan, sundalong dinambong sa mahigit dalawampung taon ang yaman ng bayan, sundalong binayoneta ang demokrasya. Lahat ng uri ng pagkasundalong ito ni Marcos, patutunayan ng mga respetadong iskolar, mamamahayag, at pampublikong intelektuwal na magsasalita sa forum na ito. Sa harap ng mga atras-abanteng pahayag ni Pangulong Duterte, pakinggan natin ang mga katotohanan ng kasaysayan na hindi nababawi o nababaluktot. Paano paghihilumin ni Pangulong Duterte ang pagkakahati ng mga Pilipino, kung gagawin niya ito sa pamamagitan ng pagpaparaya lamang sa kagustuhan ng “halos lahat ng Ilokano”? “Someone has to give” sabi niya. Pero bakit ang 70,000 na nakulong, 34,000 na tinortyur, 3,240 na pinatay, at ang kanilang mga pamilyang naulila ang kailangang ilang ulit pang magparaya? Hindi ba pantapal lang ni Pangulong Duterte ang layuning pagkaisahin ang bansa para mas mapagyaman pa ang pakikipagkaibigan niya sa mga Marcos? “Will it unite Filipinos? I don’t know, but I know there is one hatred I can erase,” sabi niya. Hindi ba’t buburahin rin ng pangulo ang malinaw na husga ng kasaysayan na ang rehimeng Marcos ay isa sa pinakamasahol na panahon sa ating kasaysayan? Hindi tiyak ni Pangulong Duterte na sa pagpapalibing na ito ay mapag-iisa niya ang bansa. Pero tiyak na sa pagbaon kay Pangulong Marcos sa Libingan ng mga Bayani magiging katanggap-tanggap ang kasinungalingan at ang pagiging mandarambong kabayanihan na rin. 

Sa forum na ito, walang palusot na biro lang ang mga pahayag, hindi kailangang hulaan ang kahulugan. Sa unang araw ng pagkaluklok n'ya sa panguluhan, samantalahin natin ang pagkakataong ito na magtipon at mag-usap bago n'ya tayo lahat masabihan ng, "Shut up!"

About the writeshop

The Third World Studies Center (TWSC) launches the 2016 TWSC Writeshop in continuing its commitment to build the capacity of early career researchers, junior faculty members, and graduate students in the social sciences. As a premiere social science research center in the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines-Diliman, the TWSC continues to develop critical, alternative paradigms to promote progressive scholarship by undertaking pioneering research and publishing original, empirically-grounded, and innovative studies.

Originally meant as a capacity-building workshop on social science research in 2010, the TWSC Writeshop transformed into a unique publication platform for early career researchers, junior faculty members, and graduate students in the social sciences. Since 2014, successful Writeshop participants were not only given the opportunity to interact with experts from the academe and the publishing industry, but also the opportunity to produce a publishable manuscript for the TWSC’s internationally refereed and CHED-accredited (A-2, Very Good - Excellent) journal Kasarinlan: Philippine Journal of Third World Studies. The 2016 TWSC Writeshop sustains this academic tradition and more.

The 2016 TWSC Writeshop marks another milestone as it transitions from module-based discussions to manuscript-driven mentoring in the form of intensive yet collegial small-group discussions. The mentors, established scholars in their respective fields and the Kasarinlan editorial staff, will bring into line problematization, researcher positionality and ethics, and crafting meaningful narratives based on empirical work to equip the participants in making a contribution in social science scholarship, i.e., by creating a publishable work. In seeing through the TWSC Writeshop’s goal, the Writeshop culminates with the publication of successful manuscripts in a special issue in Kasarinlan.

Who may apply

There will only be ten (10) successful applicants who will be called Writeshop Fellows. Applicants can be social science graduate students, early career researchers, and/or junior faculty members from any Philippine higher education institution. Applicants who are near completion of their theses/dissertations as well as those who have not yet participated in previous TWSC writeshops will be prioritized.

What to submit

Applicants must be able to submit the following to twsc.updiliman@up.edu.ph on or before 31 July 2016:

1. An unpublished article, authored solely by the applicant, with a word count of 6,000 - 8,000 words, inclusive of an abstract and a list of references, that can be developed into a full-length article for publication in the Center’s internationally refereed and CHED-accredited (A-2, Very Good - Excellent) journal Kasarinlan: Philippine Journal of Third World Studies. See author guidelines here http://bit.ly/1OFXsTa. The draft article must demonstrate theoretical rigor and must be based on empirical work. Submissions will be plagiarism-checked. 2. Soft copy of latest curriculum vitae with references.

What to expect after submission of requirements

1. All submissions will undergo plagiarism check by the Kasarinlan editorial staff. Submissions without plagiarized contents will undergo preliminary editorial evaluation by the Kasarinlan editorial staff. Ten submissions will be selected.
2. The ten applicants whose submissions were selected will be notified by email, including the terms of reference (TOR) for the Writeshop. They must convey their full understanding, agreement, and acceptance of the TOR by sending the signed TOR to twsc.updiliman@up.edu.ph.
3. There is no registration fee. Successful applicants based outside of Metro Manila may apply for subsidies, in the forms of per diem and reimbursed travel expenses subject to government accounting rules. Those who would like to avail of the above subsidies must send a signed letter addressed to the Director, Dr. Ricardo T. Jose to twsc.updiliman@up.edu.ph, with clear justification on why they are requesting for such.

What to expect during the writeshop

Day 1

Activity 1: Keynote speech on the state of the art of social sciences in the Philippines

Objective: To establish the research and publication milieu in which early-career researchers can stake their claim as potential authors.

Activity 2: Introduction of the Writeshop Fellows

Objective: To create a collegial atmosphere among the fellows.

Activity 3: Lecture on social science research and publication

Objective: To set the general parameters of problematization, research positionality, and ethics in social science research and publication.

Activity 4: Small-group discussion on problematization, research positionality, and ethics

Objective: To provide a platform for the fellows where they can engage in a dialogue with mentors and members of the editorial staff on the quality of theoretical engagement as well as ethical nuances of their manuscripts.

Conduct of small-group discussion: The fellows will be assigned to groups with two mentors and one member of the editorial staff each. The mentors will be provided with a copy of the manuscript before the writeshop to give substantive feedback. The discussion will revolve around, but will not be limited to problematization, research positionality, and ethics. The editorial staff will serve as facilitator in threshing out the following: 1) What research problem did you choose?; 2) How did you come up with this research problem?; 3) What is your stake in this research?

Day 2

Activity 5: Small group discussion on making sense of the findings and crafting narratives

Objective: To provide a platform for the fellows where they can engage in a dialogue with mentors and members of the editorial staff on the conduct of analysis and producing a coherent narrative out of the key arguments of their manuscripts.

Conduct of small-group discussion: The fellows will be assigned to groups with two mentors and one member of the editorial staff each. The mentors will be provided with a copy of the manuscript before the writeshop to give substantive feedback. The discussion will revolve around, but will not be limited to structure of the analysis and writing styles for journal articles. The editorial staff will serve as facilitator in threshing out the following: 1) How did you gather your data and from what sources?; 2) How did you analyze your data and why?; 3) What are your key findings?; 4) How do you narrate your findings to tell a story?; and 5) Is the conclusion really an ending?

Activity 6: Kasarinlan session by Managing Editor

Objective: To familiarize the fellows on plagiarism, CMOS referencing, and copy editing one's manuscripts.

Day 3

Culminating Activity: Writeshop Fellows’ Plenary Session

Objective: To provide a platform for the fellows to present their works in progress, their key learnings from the writeshop, and concrete plans for publication.

Closing Activity: Awarding of Certificates

TUNGKOL SA MGA PRESENTASYON

Reproductive Health Law: Challenges of Implementation

Dr. Jonathan David Flavier, Senior Lecturer, Linangan ng Populasyon, Kolehiyo ng Agham Panlipunan at Pilosopiya, Unibersidad ng Pilipinas-Diliman

Sa pananaw ng nag-aaral ng bilang at pag-unlad ng mga Pilipino, parehong mayroong mga natugunan at napabayaan ang administrasyong PNoy sa mga usaping: (1) pangkalahatang kalusugan, (2) pangakong MDGs (Millennium Development Goals), at (3) pantay-pantay na kalusugan ng Pilipino. Ipapakita sa presentasyong ito ang mga figures ng mga kababaihang namamatay sa pagdadalangtao para maipaliwanag ang kahalagahan na mapunan ang pangangailangan nila ng edukasyon at gabay sa mga paraan sa pagpaplano ng pamilya. Layon din ng presentasyong ito na mailatag ang mga posibleng paliwanag sa likod ng kasalukuyang estado ng mga kababaihan at pamilyang Pilipino.

Governing Land Use: New Directions or More of the Same?

Dr. Kristian Saguin, Katuwang na Propesor, Departamento ng Heograpiya, Kolehiyo ng Agham Panlipunan at Pilosopiya, Unibersidad ng Pilipinas-Diliman

A focus on land use offers a way to discuss various pressing issues that range from indigenous peoples’ land rights and urban housing tenure to food security, sustainable resource management and disaster risk reduction. In this presentation, I will examine efforts during the Aquino administration to formulate comprehensive national policies and introduce new modes of governance on land use. I will situate the progress and prospects of these efforts within the changing, sometimes contradictory, priorities of the administration.
