An invitation to a colloquium on the Marawi crisis

Everyone is invited to the Last Thursday Colloquium on the Marawi Crisis, to be held on 29 June 2017 (Thursday), from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Seminar Room, 3rd Floor, UP Institute of Small-Scale Industries, E. Virata Hall, E. Jacinto Street, University of the Philippines-Diliman. 

Samira Gutoc-Tomawis (TBC), Convener of the Ranao Rescue Team and formerly with the Bangsamoro Transition Commission, Professor Julkipli Wadi of the UP Institute of Islamic Studies, and former Cong. Ashley Acedillo of the Magdalo Party will serve as resource persons. 

The colloquium brings together speakers who will dissect the currently unfolding crisis in Marawi City that has already cost more than 300 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of civiians. The government response to the crisis, including the declaration of martial law in Mindanao, will be dealt with, as well as the prospects of an Islamic State presence in Mindanao. 

Alternatiba, the UP Third World Studies Center, and ARYA Progresibo are co-sponsoring this event.

Call for Applications: One (1) Full-Time Research Assistant (URGENT)

The Third World Studies Center, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman is looking for one (1) full-time Research Assistant for the period June to September 2017 for a project on the history of railways in Metro Manila funded by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs Emerging Interdisciplinary Research Grant (see details of the research project here). The gross salary is PHP 27,653.00.

The research assistant position requires the following qualifications:

  • Preferably a graduate from the University of the Philippines of any social science course or research-oriented discipline;
  • Diligence in tracking down sources and organizing gathered data;
  • Good writing skill in both English and Filipino; and
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
