Prof. Laura L. Samson Is the New TWSC Deputy Director


We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Laura L. Samson as Deputy Director of the UP Third World Studies Center (UP TWSC). In this capacity, Professor Samson shall serve as Editorial Supervisor of the journal, Kasarinlan: Philippine Journal of Third World Studies, and other UP TWSC publications.

Professor Samson was Chairperson of the Department of Sociology, CSSP, UP Diliman (2002-2005) and Director of the University of the Philippines Press (1995-2001). She has been teaching and doing research in the areas of sociological theory, popular culture, mass media, and cultural studies.

She is best known for her contribution to Philippine academic publishing. Under her watch, the University of the Philippines Press saw through the completion of what was then considered as the University’s biggest and most ambitious publishing venture, the “100 Taon, 100 Akda” Project, which was meant as the University’s contribution to the commemoration of the Centennial of the Philippine Revolution in 1996-1998.

Kasarinlan receives CHED Journal Incubation Grant

The Kasarinlan: Philippine Journal of Third World Studies receives a journal incubation grant from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The journal incubation grant is under the CHED's Journal Incentive Program that supports "initiatives of Philippine HEIs/scholarly and scientific organizations to improve the quality as well as boost the global prestige of Philippine journals based on current international standards of scientific and scholarly publishing" (CHED Memorandum Order No. 53, series of 2016). Specifically, the grant is given to "promising Philippine journals towards the path to meet the minimum generally accepted standards for Scopus/WoS-indexability." 

The grant provides for a cash award of PHP 400,000.00 annually over a three-year period, "technical support by CHED in providing the digital platform Portal for Academic Knowledge (PAK), CHED endorsement for library subscription, and automatic nomination for the CHED Republica: Journal of the Year category."

Under the previous CHED journal accreditation program from 2009 to 2015 Kasarinlan maintained a Category A-2 (very good to excellent) rating.

Kasarinlan is the in-house journal of the Third World Studies Center, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman.

Invitation to a public forum on the ASEAN Economic Community


National Interest and the ASEAN Economic Community:
Convergence or Competition?
A Policy Forum
17 August 2017 (Thursday), 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

The Bugkos Research Program of the UP Asian Center will hold a policy forum, "National Interest and the ASEAN Economic Community: Convergence or Competition?", on 17 August 2017 (Thursday), 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at the Seminar Room, 2F, GT-Toyota Asian Cultural Center, UP Asian Center, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Quezon City. The forum is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, but pre-registration online or by phone is REQUIRED

The forum will bring together leading political economists from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines to gain a better understanding of country processes for the ASEAN Economic Community initiative: What are the stakes for each country’s participation in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)?  How is each country preparing their domestic economies and constituencies for AEC integration? How are these countries positioning themselves in the regional trade treaties in relation to the changing global economic architecture?

Speaking at the forum are the following country experts: 
  • Philippines: Dr. Josef Yap, professorial lecturer, UP School of Economics and former president, Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS)
  • Thailand: Dr. Wisarn Pupphavesa, Senior Adviser for International Economic Relations, Thailand Development Research Institute
  • Malaysia: Dr. Tham Siew Yean, Senior Fellow, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS), Yusof Ishak Institute; and, 
  • Indonesia: Dr. Shofwan Al-Banna Choiruzzad, Research Fellow, ASEAN Study Center, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia. 


ROUNDTABLE AND REACTORS

After the presentations, a roundtable will proceed with representatives from the government and the private sector giving their reactions in order to further understand the road ahead for the Philippines and the rest of the region. Joining the forum as lead reactors include Dr. Erlinda Medalla, Philippine Institute for Development Studies and Ms. Myrene Sabina Bedaño, Department of Trade and Industry.

ABOUT THE ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

In December 2015, the ASEAN member-states formally launched the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in line with the goal of developing a single production base and market. Indeed over the past decade, much of the work has focused on reducing national barriers to foreign trade and investments as outlined in the AEC 2025 Blueprint.
